Only You Can Prevent a Lithium-Ion Truck Fire

We are asking everyone for help on a critical safety issue: the proper disposal of lithium-ion batteries.

On August 8, 2024, one of our recycle trucks was destroyed by a fire that is believed to have been caused by a lithium-ion battery. Another fire on August 21, 2024, in one of our garbage trucks was confirmed to be caused by improperly disposed lithium-ion batteries.

These incidents highlight the serious dangers of incorrect battery disposal. Please dispose of lithium-ion batteries at designated drop-off locations to help prevent such dangerous events.

How to Properly Store and Dispose of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in many devices, from smartphones to power tools. However, these batteries require careful handling to ensure safety and prevent environmental harm. Here’s what you need to know about storing and disposing of lithium-ion batteries.

Proper Storage of Lithium-Ion Batteries

  • Optimal Storage Temperature: Store lithium-ion batteries in a cool, dry place with a stable temperature between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Avoid exposure to extreme heat or cold, which can damage the battery and reduce its lifespan .
  • Charge Level: For long-term storage, keep the battery at a charge level of 40-60%. This helps prolong battery life and reduce the risk of damage. Avoid storing batteries fully charged or completely drained .
  • Safety Precautions: Store batteries in their original packaging or a non-conductive, fireproof container to prevent short circuits. Keep batteries away from flammable materials and out of direct sunlight .
  • Regular Inspection: Periodically check stored batteries for any signs of damage, such as swelling, leakage, or corrosion. If you notice any issues, do not use the battery and dispose of it properly .

Proper Disposal of Lithium-Ion Batteries

  • Do Not Throw in the Trash: Never dispose of lithium-ion batteries in your regular trash or recycling bin. They pose a fire hazard and can release harmful chemicals if damaged .
  • Use Designated Collection Sites: Many retailers, electronics stores, and recycling centers offer drop-off locations for used lithium-ion batteries. These sites ensure that batteries are handled and recycled safely .
  • Preparation for Disposal: Tape the Terminals: Before disposing of the battery, cover the terminals with electrical tape to prevent accidental short circuits .
  • Handle Damaged Batteries with Care: If the battery is damaged, place it in a non-conductive, fireproof container before disposal.
  • Follow Local Regulations: Check with your local waste management authority for specific disposal guidelines in your area. Some locations may offer special collection events for hazardous household waste, including lithium-ion batteries.
  • Participate in Recycling Programs: Many manufacturers and organizations offer battery recycling programs. Participating in these programs helps ensure that batteries are recycled responsibly, reducing environmental impact.

By following these guidelines, you can help protect the environment and reduce the risk of fires or injuries associated with improper battery handling. Always store and dispose of lithium-ion batteries with care.
