Cardboard Recycling Tips

  • Prepare cardboard for recycling by removing any other materials such as plastic wrap, polystyrene peanuts or blocks and other non-cardboard packing materials.
  • Flatten cardboard as much as possible making sure the boxes fit the width of the container and please avoid overloading the container.
  • Keep cardboard boxes dry and free from food waste.
  • Don’t recycle wax-coated boxes. Wax coating is used to resist humidity and moisture. This box will repel water. We suggest reusing these types of boxes whenever possible.
  • If Styrofoam cannot be removed from the cardboard, it cannot be recycled and goes in the trash.

What about removing tape and labels?

  • You do not need to remove tape or labels. The recycling process for corrugated material is equipped to handle labels and tape, so you can save yourself time and energy by leaving the tape and labels alone.
  • These are just a few recycling best practices we recommend. Thank you for choosing to recycle!

Is recycling cardboard worth it?

  • 60 average sized cardboard boxes use more than half of a one-ton pine tree.
  • Currently, about 70 percent of cardboard boxes shipped commercially are recovered for recycling.
  • Recycling Cardboard uses less energyand lessens the emission of dioxide produced making pulp from trees.
  • Many boxes are made of recycled materials or lumber industry byproducts like sawdust and wood chips.
  • When recycled, cardboard is used to make chipboard like cereal boxes, paperboard, paper towels, tissues and printing or writing paper. It’s also made into more corrugated cardboard.

How is cardboard recycled?

  • The cardboard is re-pulped and the fibers are separated.
  • The fibers are screened and cleaned to eliminate contaminants, then washed, pressed and rolled into paper.
  • The rolls of paper are then converted into boxes or made into new products.

  • When in doubt, let our Waste Wizard help out!

Contamination in Recycling

To ensure a viable recycling product is delivered to recycling markets, it is necessary to eliminate all contamination in your recycling container. What is contamination? Contamination of recycling can be caused by items such as; food scraps, lids, plastic bags, coffee pods, straws, to-go containers, Styrofoam, trash or any other ‘non-program’ material.

Unfortunately, “Wishful” recycling (the hope that a material is recyclable somewhere) can have serious consequences for your haulers, the recycling programs offered, and the overall recycling markets such as, an entire truck load of recycling getting rejected and sent to a landfill.

Make your recycling efforts count by following our guidelines and ‘When in doubt, let our Waste Wizard help out’.

Recycling Motor Oil

Pure used motor oil must be poured into one gallon not breakable containers with tight fitting screw caps. Please do not mix any other solvents or fluids such as water, antifreeze, old fuel, etc. Place jugs NEXT TO your recycle cart and call our office by 4pm the day before your pick up, so that we can make your driver aware that you have motor oil.
